"If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee,...Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul" (Deut. 13:1-3).
In this test, we see the possibility of a false prophet with a "sign" or a "wonder" actually coming to pass. This same thing will be reenacted during the Tribulation Period under the "signs" and "miracles" of the work of the False Prophet, or second "beast coming up out of the earth" (Rev. 13:11- 15). Like those times in Deuteronomy, this flight of false efforts will be used to "deceive"; to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. No mere sign, howsoever great it may be presented, is the final proof of spiritual things or a spiritual truth. We must give the miracle this test. God often permits such false prophets to flourish to see if WE will obey—to see if our character will discern. This is certainly a part of our quest for Christian Purity!
